- 3/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tsp finely grated lemon peel
- 1/4 tsp cracked black pepper
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 3/4 cup self-rising flour
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
- 1 None egg
- 1 1/2 cups beer
- None None Vegetable oil, for deep-frying
- 1 1/3 lbs white fish fillets
- None None Lemon wedges, to serve
Method
- Combine mayonnaise, lemon peel and juice, and pepper in small bowl.
- Whisk flours, five-spice, egg and beer in medium bowl until smooth.
- Fill a large saucepan or deep fryer one-third full with vegetable oil; heat to 350°C (or until a cube of bread turns golden in 10 seconds). Dip fish in batter; draining off excess. Deep-fry fish, in batches, until cooked through. Drain on paper towels. Serve with mayonnaise and lemon wedges, if desired.
