Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. soft butter or margarine
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • pinch of salt
  • 5 c. sliced tart apples
  • 3 Tbsp. flour
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Method

  • Mix together the flour, sugar and salt.
  • Cut in the butter. Set aside 3/4 cup of this crumbly mixture.
  • Press the remainder of this mixture into a 9-inch pie pan.
  • Combine the apples, 3 tablespoons flour, 1 cup sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Arrange in the pie shell.
  • Bake at 425° for 20 minutes.
  • Then sprinkle with the reserved crumbs and continue to bake for 20 to 30 minutes longer until browned.
