Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 c. chopped walnuts
  • 3 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
  • 5 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 tsp. almond flavor
  • 1 tsp. vanilla flavor
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 1/2 c. milk
  • 1/4 c. sugar

Method

  • Sift
  • the
  • flour,
  • baking
  • powder
  • and salt; set aside. Cream together
  • the
  • fat and flavors, gradually add the 1 1/2 cups sugar,
  • beat
  • until light and fluffy.
  • Add the egg yolks. Beat well.
  • Add the
  • sifted dry ingredients alternately with the milk. Beat
  • until
  • smooth after each addition ending with flour.
  • Beat the
  • egg whites until frothy; add 1/4 cup sugar. Make a
  • glossy (not dry) meringue. Fold into batter with nuts. Pour in 2 (9-inch) greased and floured pans.
  • Bake at 350° for 45 minutes.
