Ingredients

  • 1/2 cups Shortening
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 2 whole Eggs
  • 2 cups Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 2 teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons Cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoons Salt
  • 4 cups Finely Chopped Jonathan Apples
  • _____
  • FOR THE TOPPING:
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 cups Butter
  • 1/2 cups Cream (or Evaporated Milk)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla

Method

  • Preheat oven to 350F. In a large mixer bowl, cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Sift together the flour, baking soda, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt. Add to the creamed mixture. Fold in the apples.
  • Spray a 13x9 with Pam. Pour mixture into pan and bake 45-55 minutes until a tester comes out clean. For topping, mix the topping ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, boil for a few minutes, until it thickens slightly. Cut cake in squares, place in serving bowls and pour a generous amount of buttery syrup on top. Double the topping ingredients if you are serving several people, or just because it's so delicious.
