Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 2 c. all-purpose flour (white, whole wheat or half and half)
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 c. milk

Method

  • Heat oven to 450°.
  • Cut shortening into flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Stir with fork or mix with pastry blender until mixture resembles fine crumbs.
  • Stir in milk until dough leaves side of bowl (dough will be sticky).
  • Turn dough onto lightly floured surface.
  • Knead lightly 10 times.
  • Roll or pat 1/2-inch thick. Cut with floured 2 1/2-inch cookie cutter.
  • Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake until golden brown (10 to 12 minutes). Immediately remove from cookie sheet.
  • Yields 1 dozen biscuits.
