Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. flour
  • 1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/8 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 3/4 c. boiling water
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten

Method

  • Mix together first 7 ingredients; cut in shortening with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture is crumbly; set aside. Obtain 9-inch pie shell; set aside.
  • Combine 4 remaining ingredients.
  • Alternate layers in pie shell of crumbs and liquid mixture, ending with crumbs as top layer.
  • Bake at 450° for 10 minutes.
  • Reduce heat to 350° and bake about 20 minutes longer or until firm.
