- 3/4 c. flour
- 1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp. ground cloves
- 1/8 tsp. ground ginger
- 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 2 Tbsp. shortening
- 1/2 c. molasses
- 3/4 c. boiling water
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 egg yolk, beaten
Method
- Mix together first 7 ingredients; cut in shortening with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture is crumbly; set aside. Obtain 9-inch pie shell; set aside.
- Combine 4 remaining ingredients.
- Alternate layers in pie shell of crumbs and liquid mixture, ending with crumbs as top layer.
- Bake at 450° for 10 minutes.
- Reduce heat to 350° and bake about 20 minutes longer or until firm.
