Ingredients

  • 2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 5 Tbsp. water (cold)
  • 6 medium tart cooking apples
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. butter or oleo

Method

  • Sift flour and salt into a bowl.
  • Add shortening and cut it in with 2 knives or a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Sprinkle in the water.
  • Mix lightly.
  • Turn out onto a pastry board and shape in a ball.
  • Roll dough 1/8-inch thick into an 18 x 12-inch rectangle.
  • Cut into 6-inch squares.
  • Peel apples and core.
  • Place in center of pastry square.
  • Mix sugar, cinnamon and salt.
  • Pour into center of each apple.
  • Pat with oleo.
  • Bring points over apples and press edges together.
  • Brush surface with milk.
  • Bake at 400° for 45 minutes or until apple is tender.
