Ingredients

  • 1 c. Shortening (or possibly margarine)
  • 1 c. Sifted confectioners sugar
  • 1 x Egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp Almond extract
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 2 1/2 c. Gold medal wondra flour (cake flour)
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Red food coloring Granulated sugar

Method

  • My Aunt made these and they are one of my favorite Christmas cookies.
  • They are delicate in flavor and usually a real winner.
  • Preheat oven to 375F.
  • Mix first 5 ingredients together.
  • Sift flour and salt together.
  • Stir 1/2 of flour mix into shortening mix.
  • Work remaining flour into mix with hands till the dough holds together.
  • Divide dough in half.
  • Mix 1/2 of dough with red food coloring.
  • Healthy pinch off a bit of white dough and roll into a long cigarette, healthy pinch off a bit of red dough and roll into a long cigarette.
  • Twist white and red dough together, place on cookie sheet and bend into a candy cane shape.
  • Bake 9 min.
  • Remove from oven and dust with granulated sugar.
  • The first time you make them watch the time as your cookies might be larger or possibly smaller than mine
