Ingredients

  • 2 c. water
  • 2 Tbsp. or packet dry yeast
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 1/3 c. oil
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 3 c. unbleached flour
  • 3 to 3 1/2 c. flour

Method

  • Beat together water, yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar.
  • Let stand 10 minutes.
  • Stir in this order sugar, oil, salt and 3 cups flour. Beat well.
  • Gradually add 3 to 3 1/2 cups kneading gently until smooth.
  • Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise until double (45 to 60 minutes).
  • Knead dough again and divide in half.
  • Shape into loaves and place into well-greased 9 x 5-inch baking pans.
  • Cover and let rise until doubled, 45 minutes.
  • Bake at 375° for 35 to 40 minutes.
  • Cool on wire racks.
  • Makes 2 loaves.
