Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 apples
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. water
  • cinnamon
  • red food coloring
  • red hots (optional)

Method

  • Peel apples and cut into chunks or thick slices. (To keep from darkening, apples can be placed in a bowl of saltwater after they are sliced.) Place sugar, water and several red hots in heavy saucepan; stir well and simmer. Add generous sprinkle of cinnamon and enough food coloring to make the solution bright red. Add part of the apples (drained, if they have been soaked) and cook until tender. Remove and continue with the remainder. Then cook the syrup until thickened and pour over apples in casserole or dish and chill. They keep well in the refrigerator.
