Ingredients

  • 5 c. flour, divided
  • 2 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 c. warm milk (120~ to 130~)
  • 1/2 c. warm water (120~ to 130~)
  • cornmeal

Method

  • In large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt and baking soda.
  • Add warm milk and water.
  • Beat on low speed for 30 seconds and on high speed for 3 minutes.
  • Stir in remaining flour.
  • Dough will be stiff.
  • Do not knead.
  • Grease 2 loaf pans; sprinkle with cornmeal.
  • Spoon batter into pans.
  • Sprinkle cornmeal on top.
  • Cover; let rise until double, about 45 minutes. Bake at 375° for 35 minutes.
  • Remove from pans immediately; cool on rack.
  • Slice and toast.
