Ingredients

  • 2 lb. beef chuck, cut into 1 1/2-inch cubes
  • 2 Tbsp. fat
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 6 carrots
  • 1 lb. small white potatoes
  • dash of allspice or cloves

Method

  • Thoroughly brown the meat on all sides in hot fat, turning often.
  • Add boiling water, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, sliced onions, bay leaves and seasonings.
  • Cover and simmer.
  • Don't boil for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally to keep from sticking. Remove bay leaves and garlic clove.
  • Add carrots, onions and cubed potatoes.
  • Cover and cook 30 minutes.
